Fresh liver is an amazing food – it’s packed with vitamins and minerals as well as high-quality protein. In a home-cooked diet, it’s a super-valuable source of micro-nutrients such as copper and selenium which can be hard to obtain from other ingredients.
You can have too much of a good thing however, as it is possible to overdo the amount of liver in a dog’s diet with potentially serious health implications. Liver is incredibly high in vitamin A, and in extreme doses this essential vitamin can cause problems including depression, sickness, peeling skin and even convulsions and paralysis. It is really hard to reach these levels however, unless you were feeding an almost exclusively liver-based diet, so don’t worry unless your dog has a total liver obsession!
This recipe, for a tasty liver casserole, does contain a lot of vitamin A but it’s still well within the safe upper limit for everyday feeding. It also contains red and green cabbage which are both high in vitamins K, C, B6 and folic acid as well as antioxidants, and sweet potato for healthy energy.
As well as a little calcium carbonate (don’t forget you can buy our new PureCal Seasoning from our online store), this recipe also includes Brewer’s yeast. This by-product of the brewing process is a really concentrated source of protein and also has high levels of zinc, another micro-nutrient that is often hard to source in homemade meals.
To make a 1000kcal batch (which is enough for an average 16kg adult dog for one day), you’ll need:
✅ 400g Lamb’s liver
✅ 400g Sweet potato
✅ 200g Cabbage (a mix of red and white)
✅ 4g Calcium carbonate
✅ 5g Brewer’s yeast (nutritional yeast is also suitable)
✅ 500ml water
With the ingredients weighed out, chop up the liver, sweet potato and cabbage into small pieces and put everything in a saucepan with the water, bring to the boil and then simmer gently for around 15 minutes, stirring regularly. Remove from the heat once the liver, sweet potato and cabbage are soft, and allow to cool completely before serving.
