Home cooking, made easy

Updated: Nov 23, 2020

Home cooking for your dog doesn’t need to be complicated or take hours. Like most dog owners, I’m passionate about providing the right, healthy diet for my pup – but I’ve also got a busy life and not much spare time. So that’s why the recipes I create are all designed to take no more than 5 minutes to prepare and can be cooked and served in under half an hour.

This super-simple recipe for Turkey with Broccoli & Rice is a great example – it literally takes a couple of minutes to prepare, around 10-15 minutes to cook, and a then it’s just a matter of waiting for it to cool before serving.

Although it’s a simple recipe, it’s packed full of highly nutritious ingredients which make up a well-balanced meal for any dog:

  • ✅ Turkey – like chicken, turkey is a lean, healthy meat which provides plenty of high-quality protein that’s easy for your dog to digest and convert into muscle

  • ✅ Broccoli – this ‘super-food’ veg provides a healthy vitamin and mineral boost with B vitamins, vitamin C, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and plenty of fibre

  • ✅ Rice – although some people prefer not to feed their dogs grains, for most dogs, rice and other grains are a healthy source of easily-digestible energy along with some trace elements such as manganese which is vital for healthy bones

  • ✅ Calcium supplement - without additional calcium, this recipe would contain only 10% of the calcium a dog needs every day, so adding a good source of this essential mineral is vital if you’re feeding home-made regularly. If you’re in the UK, you can order VetChef PureCal Seasoning online from our website

To make a 100kcal batch (which is enough for an average 16kg adult dog for one day), you’ll need:

✅ 300g Turkey mince

✅ 200g Rice

✅ 100g Broccoli

✅ 4g Calcium carbonate

✅ 600ml water

Weigh out and add everything to a saucepan with the water. Bring to the boil and turn down the heat to simmer gently for around 15 mins, stirring regularly. Add more water if needed. Remove from the heat once the rice is cooked and most of the water has been absorbed, allow to cool before serving.
